| Windows: Microsoft has ended support for Windows XP (SP1), Windows ME, 98 and 95. All offices should be using Windows 2000 (SP4), Windows XP (SP2) or Windows Server 2000 or Windows Server 2003. |
| |
| Servers: Microsoft's Small Business Server 2003 is the best networking product for your small business. It's an incredible value! |

Vista WINDOWS VISTA IS HERE! There are many new versions available in the US You are mostly likely to see: Vista Home Basic. Vista Home Premium Vista Business Vista Ultimate Compare them here!
There are also 2 other versions: Vista Starter (in other countries, "emerging Markets" Vista Enterprise (volume licensing)
Download the Vista Upgrade Advisor from Microsoft. Does JK Tech recommend MS Windows VISTA? For new computers. Absolutely. It's amazing. New computers will have the adequate horsepower to run this beautiful new operating system. The system is powerful and very easy to use, especially for a non-power user. Many of the messages are easier for a novice to understand. It's the best system that MS has produced.
However, critical business applications must be tested and certified for your office. If possible, try one Vista computer and see how well it works for you and your company! For upgrades: No. Wayne's Sony VAIO K15 Laptop is a good example. The video card is not compatible with VISTA and cannot do basic video playback. The Standard VGA driver has to be used. No movies or DVDs.... No full motion video at all.
The XP ATI video drivers crash the system. So far, there are no VISTA counterparts for this specific video card.
The RAM had to be upgraded just to get VISTA to run well. As a general rule, VISTA takes about 2 to 3 times more RAM than XP
There is a bug in the storage driver that causes errors in the device manager and nagging messages.
it's slow. (1G RAM, Pentium 4 (2.8gHz)., 80GB HD). The computer is a Sony laptop that runs beautifully with Windows XP. It's slower on Vista.
You may have similar experiences. This is common, whenever a piece of hardware that is designed for one OS is changed to another OS. it has always happened, since DOS, Windows 3.x, Windows 9.x, Windows 2000 and Windows XP. It happens with Macs. It happens on the new Mac hardware that is compatible with Windows. It happens in Unix and LInux. It will happen with Vista, too. If you have a good computer with XP, we recommend that you leave it alone and enjoy it's return on your investment.. Since the holidays, Wayne returned the laptop to Windows XP, where it is a superb system. Everything works. Conclusion: If you're buying a new computer and don't have "critical" applications, try VISTA! If you have critical business applications, hire a consulting firm (such as JK Technologies) to evaluate Vista and your business software! Contact us for additional information!

Internet Explorer 7 Does JK Tech recommend Internet Explorer 7 for Homes? Absolutely. IE 7 is the most secure Microsoft Browser to date. And it's the easiest to use with remarkable features. Upgrade now! Does JK Tech recommend Internet Explorer 7 for Business? As of August 2007, In general, yes. Most of the software industry has caught up with Microsoft. For example, Quickbooks 2004 and later can be patched to coexist with IE 7. There are some compatibility problems between IE 7 and some older business applications (such as QuickBooks 2003 and older). Be prepared to upgrade if you have older applications.. |

IBM made fantastic laptops, probably the best PC product that they sell. They're expensive, but worth it! However, the recent take over by Lenovo leaves the future uncertain. |

Computers On a Tight Budget: Acer is the #5 manufacturer of PCs in the world. We've used their systems with good success. Acer makes good laptops, desktops, monitors, and individual components. However, it is illogical to expect the same level of performance out of a $700 computer as one should be able to expect from a $5,000 computer. Acer remains a good buy within the budget market. |

| Cell Phones: It is my personal opinion that Verizon is not a good company to deal with. They offer poor DSL service, poor customer relations, and design their products to get the maximum amount of your money possible.. For example, Verizon intentionally cripples built in features so that they can charge extra money for technology that are already in some of their phones, and then they call it an extra "service." They call this design a "closed garden" and only allow approved products on the Verizon network. |
| |
| That being the case, their cellular network is really the best out there. The Verizon engineers know how to make their network work, even if Verizon executives don't know how to please the public or be fair to their customers. |
| |
| In the last 10 years, we have used and evaluated Sprint, T-Moble, Suncom, Cingular, and Alltel. Verizon simply has better coverage. We will use Verizon for phones, until someone builds a better network than Verizon's CDMA network. |
| |
| Nokia phones are recommended. They are incredibly durable. |
| |
| We recommend the Motorola E710 and E815 phone. They are fantastic cell phones. The Motorola RAZR is very "feature-rich" and very cool. |
| |
| For push email, Blackberry is still the best product on the market. We have installed Blackberries on Verizon, T-Mobile, Sprint and Nextel. The Blackberry system is very good. |
| |
The technology behind AT&T/Cingular (GSM) is better technology, but as of a year ago, the network was very immature in Virginia. The merger between Cingular and the old Suncom network was problematic.

Printers: For most companies, HP still offers the best printers. They're not as good as the old HP4s....those days are gone. But, consider cost per sheet, features, and maintenance, and HP is still the first choice for businesses that need black and white printing. The HP 2400 line is very good. We do not recommend any other HP Printing products. Our customers have had very bad experiences with HP all in ones, digital copiers, less expensive color laserjets, etc. We're still looking for a great solution for color printing... The best color laser printer we've seen to date is the HP 5550n, which is a $3000 printer. Below that price range, Ricoh and Xerox have good reputations We installed an excellent Xerox C2424 Workcentre ($2000) that uses solid ink technology. |

Internet Access: We've setup Internet Access for dozens of providers. However, JK Technologies currently recommends 3 providers of Internet Access. History has proven that these companies deliver consistent access to the Internet with easy setup and configuration, excellent customer service, and minimal down time. As a general rule, small business customers should use Cable Modems, DSL or T1. Satellite systems and hybrid systems are not recommended. Radio Internet Access is only recommended if a wired product is not available. |

Credit Card Processing and Gift Cards. We have had FANTASTIC success with Chase Payment Tech. Chase Payment Tech is a division of Chase Bank. However, these people worked with us as if we were their only client. They exceeded our expedited deadline. In other words, we need an extremely fast turnaround, and they delivered early. Chase Payment Tech has our highest recommendation. Contact us for the name of our representative. We use Paypal's Virtual Terminal. Works like a champ. |

| Telephone Systems: Duke Communications is THE expert for telephone systems. Period. |
| |
| Point of Sale Systems: We only recommend Data Business Systems with Retail Pro or Positouch, depending on your requirements. These people are fantastic, responsive, and they know their products. There are cheaper solutions, but our advice is to buy the best solution. |
